The early days.

After reading The Diva's latest article in the BNL I got to thinking about my own experiences and a young boy finding a life long friend in the 5 string banjo. I remember in the 7th grade in chorus class, a class that I took because it was pretty much a free pass, a friend brought his banjo to school to play for the class. Even at that stage he was a pretty good picker. I remember watching and listening and how I was just overwhelmed with what I was hearing. At that point I decided that I had to learn to do this. It was close to Christmas and my mother ask me one day what I wanted for Christmas. A banjer I said, and she just kinda said ooooookaaaaay!? I remember she told my father What I wanted a he said that it would be a waste of money, just something to pile up in the corner , but mama knowing  what I  wanted got it for me. A $80.00 Hondo from Brendles department store. Daddy wanted to at least give me the benefit of doubt found a guy by the name of Larry Watson to give me lessons. I still recall how excited I was carrying that awesome Hondo in for my first lesson. I've went thru a few banjers since then, but I still crack a smile every time I see one of those block inlay with the wood armrest banjos. I never failed to always play mama a tune ever so often thru the years up to the time she past away for without her faith and encouragement I would have never known the joy that the banjo can give.
